The adult degree completion program in social work is a fast-paced curriculum that enables adults who work full-time to complete a BSW degree. Courses meet in eight and sixteen week modules, which allow students to create a class schedule that fit into professional and personal commitments. The BSW program of Aurora University is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
The Bachelor of Social Work program at AU combines a strong liberal arts foundation with professional training in theory and meaningful field work. Our faculty members will help students acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to become a qualified social worker guided by strong ethics and values, earned through practical experiences.
When students graduate from the BSW program, they are prepared to take the Illinois State Social Work license exam (LSW) and enter the work force as a professional social worker or to pursue graduate education in the field. Many graduates enter the AU MSW program with advanced standing, which allows for completion of a master's degree within one to two years.
The Adult Degree Completion Bachelor of Social Work major includes:
- The university's general education requirements, including courses in General Psychology, Principles of Sociology and United States Government. You may be able to gain credit for prior college courses to fulfill these requirements.
- 44 semester hours of foundational and advanced social work courses, electives and internship experiences
- 450 hours of supervised agency-based social work over two terms. In each internship experience, students will be required to complete at least 225 clock hours, over one semester. Each week, students will be expected to spend between 10 and 14 hours at their selected internship site.
Career Opportunities
The BSW program will prepare you to pursue beginning-level direct practice employment in human services. Many of our students work in agencies such as community centers, rehabilitation centers, group homes, child welfare agencies, correctional facilities, housing and food programs, and crisis centers.
