Disability Resource Office (DRO)

The Disability Resource Office (DRO) is dedicated to building lives that matter by empowering students with documented disabilities to participate in every aspect of academic and campus life. Through a collaborative effort with AU faculty, staff, and others in the campus community, the goal is to provide an educational experience and environment that are accessible, equitable, and inclusive.

Aurora University is committed to compliance with all applicable federal laws regarding reasonable academic and housing accommodations to address environmental barriers. The DRO supports this institutional commitment to diversity by providing educational opportunities for qualified individuals with disabilities through accessible programs and services in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, as amended by the ADA Amendments Act of 2008.

Requesting Accommodations

To request academic and/or housing accommodations with the DRO, students must complete a 3-step registration process required to determine reasonable accommodations:

  1. Submit the Request to Determine Accommodations Form.
  2. Submit documentation to verify the disability. Review the DRO Documentation Guidelines for details.
  3. Participate in an Access Meeting to discuss accommodation requests.

Students requesting housing accommodations are encouraged to review relevant dates that may impact the availability of accommodated spaces.

Accommodation Renewal

Students are responsible for renewing their approved academic accommodations before the start of each academic year of intended use.  Approved accommodations can be renewed at any point throughout a semester, but accommodations are not retroactive, meaning they cannot affect instances before the accommodations being activated. To renew accommodations, students must complete the Academic Accommodations Renewal Form. New documentation is not required unless students are requesting new accommodations that are not supported by current documentation on file.

Temporary Accommodations

Students with temporary disabilities resulting from major injury, illness, or surgery may qualify for temporary accommodations if the disability substantially limits their ability to participate at AUTo request temporary accommodations, submit the Request to Determine Accommodations Form as soon as possible and email the DRO regarding the request at disabilityresources@aurora.edu.

Modifying Accommodations

Students already registered with the DRO who wish to modify their accommodations should reach out to schedule an Access Meeting to discuss their requests.
