Computer Science (BS, Minor)

Why study Computer Science?

Computer scientists are problem solvers, inventors, and designers. They are knowledgeable about how computers and computer programs work, ultimately enriching lives and improving workplace productivity. Students who are interested in exploring information technology and software engineering will find Computer Science to be a rewarding area of study.

Why study Computer Science at AU?

The AU Computer Science program is designed to meet the demands of today and to anticipate the needs of tomorrow. You will learn the fundamentals of Computer Science, including computer architecture, programming, database systems, data structures, and algorithm design. Our program is designed to develop effective problem solvers, exposing you to techniques and best practices that are similar to what you will experience in the real world. You will practice what you learn, giving you a clear sense of the profession prior to graduation

Computer Science majors are in high demand and work in a variety of fields. They design and build computer networks, manage large databases, secure and protect computer systems, create animated movies and video games, and develop and test software. To further focus your studies based on your career goals, you will choose one of two areas:

  • Software Engineering, which prepares you for a career in software development and project management.
  • Information Technology, which prepares you for a career in implementing and maintaining IT solutions for organizations.

If you would like to explore academics beyond your major, you can also minor in Computer Science. For example, pairing a Computer Science minor with a major in Political Science and Public Policy will give you the skills to mobilize voters, analyze public policy, and develop sophisticated campaign strategies.

You can also expand your career opportunities with a double major in CybersecurityFinance, Marketing, or Mathematics. Even with a second major, you’ll still be able to graduate in four years.
